What a Prompt Is
Why Clear Instructions Matter
The Conversational Mindset
A prompt is simply the written instruction or question you give an AI assistant. Think of it like starting a conversation with a helpful assistant sitting across the desk.
AI cannot guess your intent or hidden background. Giving clear details and specific context ensures the answer matches your exact situation rather than offering generic advice.
You do not need code or special keywords. Write in complete sentences as if speaking to a helpful human colleague who wants to assist you with a project.
The Structure
The Simple Four-Part Prompt Formula
Combine these four simple building blocks whenever you need accurate output. You can use all four parts together or pick the elements that best fit your immediate goal.
1. Role + 2. Task
2. Context + 4. Format
Tell AI who you want it to act as and what you want it to do. Example: “Act as a helpful writing assistant and create a friendly email inviting my family to dinner.”
Give AI the important details it needs, then tell it how you want the answer presented. Example: “The dinner is Saturday at 6 PM at my house. Keep the invitation warm and casual and limit it to about 75 words.”

Why it fails: Too brief and vague. The AI does not know who you are inviting, the occasion, tone, date, or necessary meeting details.
Why it succeeds: 'Write a warm email inviting four old friends to a casual outdoor dinner this Friday at 7 PM. Keep it short and ask about food allergies.'

Assuming AI Knows Context
Overloading One Prompt
If the first answer is not quite right, guide it gently. Ask the AI to 'Make it shorter', 'Explain this for a senior citizen', or 'Rewrite in a friendlier tone'.
AI may not always have the background or personal context needed for your request. Include the important details—such as your goal, audience, location, budget, or preferences—when they will help AI give you a better answer.
Avoid asking ten complex questions in a single prompt. Break large projects into smaller step-by-step requests for much higher quality.
